LUCK SAVES ALIF AND TUMPAT TEAM

Muhammad Alif from Tumpat

 

Muhammad Alif survived the final day misfortune which happened to his unlucky friends from the Tumpat team and clinched the final place in the under 18 male category. It has been a long time desire for the plucky lad as last year was the closest he has been to be a Kelantan representative. It was all down to hard work in training and, of course, a little luck.

In round 7, Alif was in the brink of disaster as his opponent was delivering the final mating attack. However, as luck was smiling at him, his opponent's handphone rang (what amount to NOKIA GAMBIT according to hairulovchessmaniac) and there was an arbiter watching at the opponent's back. His opponent stood up angrily and went out with neither a handshake nor signing the scoresheet. 

While in round 8, Alif missed a chance to get a free pawn and the endgame was heading to a draw in the King + pawn ending when his opponent made a mistake. Firstly, the opponent gives away a pawn from Diagram 1 in the hope to get the opposition.

Black played 1... g5+, 2.hxg5+ Kg6! (not 2... fxg5+ when 3.Kf5 wins the pawn and the opposition) 3.gxf6 Kxf6, 4.g5+ Kg6, 5.Kg4 Kg7, 6.Kf5 which brings us to Diagram 2.

Here, Alif was saved when his opponent played 1... Kg8?? giving away the opposition and the game.

Meanwhile, Faezzah, Durrani and Muhammad Adib all stumbled in the last round while Farahim and Fahman lost the race in round 7. Maznie, who won both her games on the last day, were not able to get into the Kelantan team with only 5.5 points and finished 11th.
